About

Hello and welcome to The Crafty Badger! During my career as an Early Years childcare professional I’ve accumulated a huge range of ideas for interesting crafty ideas to keep kids entertained, whilst developing their social, creative and intellectual skills. I’m also a mother to three very active young boys whose demand for engaging activities seems insatiable! I now spend a lot of time preparing activities for the after-school craft club that I run. The Crafty Badger is a growing repository of my ideas and resources, that I hope will be of value to other parents, club leaders and educators.

Why 'The Crafty Badger'?

Good question! Throughout my career I have sought to allow children to develop their own path, exploring their particular interests at their own pace. In this way they are encouraged to develop confidence, tenacity and resilience. These are characteristics that are often associated with badgers. Badgers may rarely be seen, but they are sociable, intelligent, opportunistic and resilient. They generally try to avoid conflict, but are formidable adversaries when cornered. Pretty good role models really!

What's on the site?

Each post focuses on a particular activity which is designed to last around an hour, although obviously this will vary according to each child’s interest and ability. Some activities are better suited to particular age groups, but I have attempted to indicate how each can be modified for children of different ages and abilities.

Craft activities may utilise materials and tools whose use involves an element of risk. Each post indicates the range of potential hazards associated with the activity, and what mitigation can be employed to minimise the risk of harm. Users should undertake their own risk assessments before beginning each activity.

Each post also provides a complete list of the resources required to undertake the activity, and may include links to potential suppliers. Some of these are affiliate links, which means that I may receive a small commission on each sale at no additional cost to you.
